Colouring foods
Full colour intensity – without artificial colours or preservatives Colouring foods are food ingredients made from colourful fruits, vegetables and edible plants. Colourful foods can be produced completely free of colours and preservatives (100% clean label) using these products. Colouring foods also do not need to be declared as colourings or with an E number.
What are colouring foods?
Colouring foods are food ingredients made from colourful fruits, vegetables and edible plants. These products are therefore a truly natural alternative to conventional food colourings – without E numbers!
What ingredients are used to make colouring foods?
Colouring foods are made from 100% fruit, vegetables and edible plants. The raw materials come from controlled cultivation by fixed contractual partners. During production, the natural raw materials are processed into a highly concentrated essence using only physical processes and water as the process medium. Production of colouring foods from 100% fruit and vegetables During the production of the products, the natural raw materials (i.e. fruit, vegetables and edible plants) are processed into a highly concentrated essence using only physical processes and water as the process medium. No organic solvents, colourings, preservatives or ingredients of animal origin are used. This means that the products also meet the requirements for vegetarian and vegan foods. Colouring foods are therefore, by definition, not additives and do not need to be labelled with an E number.
Do colouring foods contain additional sugar?
The powder colours contain the fructose from the raw materials used, for example from apples, carrots or blackcurrants. In addition, maltodextrin is used in powder colours, for example, which is required as a carrier material when pulverising the colour. Without the addition of the carrier material, the colours could not be further processed into powder.
Colouring foods are therefore not additives by definition and do not need to be labelled with an E number.
Declaration of colouring foods
As colouring foods are normal ingredients and therefore part of the recipe, they only need to be listed in the ingredients list as what they are and with what is listed in the respective specifications. For example: ‘colouring food: carrots and paprika’ or ‘colouring concentrate (paprika and carrot)’.
